WRC RALLY PORTUGAL - A world class race

This rally already counts 47 editions and it starts in Lisbon, runs to the South passing by Alentejo and finishes in Algarve. It was integrated in the world circuit by the FIA and was considered the best Rally in the World for five times. In the Portuguese roads have competed pilots such as Carlos Sainz, Sébastien Loeb, Markku Alén, Juha Kankkunen and Colin McRae.

It started in 1967 as “Rali TAP” and in 1975 changed its name to “Rali de Portugal” and for years was a stage counting to the world championship. In that time the pilots drove roads from north to south in the country. Despite the successes, FIA ended up withdrawing this stage from WRC only returning to the calendar in 2007, with another philosophy and featuring all-gravel roads rather than asphalted roads.

The Rally started then to happen in Alentejo and Algarve, in the South of the country, where it is possible to carry out a greater number of rounds, and brought back the most important names in motor sports world. Sébastien Ogier has won the 2013 edition, which was the fourth stage of the World Rally Championship.

This sport is so popular in Portugal that exists a national rally championship. Before the Rally de Portugal takes place, the “Rali de Fafe” is always held in the North of Portugal, being considered a test for the main stage. This motor sport is very appreciated in northern Portugal and in Madeira, where every year, in the end of July and beginning of August, is held the “Rali Vinho Madeira”.
