ALGARVE

Land of beaches and good fish

From Odeceixe to Vila Real de Santo António there are 200 kilometres of beach to discover, but Algarve has much more to offer. It is the best golf destination in Europe and the fish served in the restaurants of Olhão and Portimão is, according to Jamie Oliver, the best in the world. During the summer or winter, the extreme south of Portugal is always worthy of a visit. The beaches are the visit card of the South, but there is more to offer. It is in Algarve that the Sagres Point is located, and it was there that the Infant Dom Henrique established the school that would launch the Portuguese to the adventure of the Age of Discovery. And who starts in Sagres may continue to Lagos, a city of a younger and alternative tourism, or just go straight down to Portimão and Praia da Rocha. It is between Portimão and Faro that can be found the most touristic beaches of Armação de Pêra, Quarteira, Albufeira, Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago. The beaches attract people and people give life to the night in the discos and bars. The national jet set does not forfeit Algarve and its summer parties. The animation is centered in the Algarve Barlavento (“luff”), but beyond Faro, in Sotavento (“lee”), can be found a more genuine Algarve, where it is possible to observe the Arab influences in architecture, of which the chimneys are the most characteristic detail. The beaches are peaceful and the cities are different. Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António are places that have maintained their identity. The Natural Park of Ria Formosa comprises various islets where it is possible to sunbathe and in Castro Marim the salt marsh is a protected area.

Delicious seafood can be eaten in Cacela Velha, but the truth is that good fish and shellfish are served in the entire Algarve. Caught by the fishermen of Olhão it reaches the tables still fresh, with a scent of sea. The region has a confectionery to die for, made with figs, almonds and carob. The Dom Rodrigo is the most famous of them.

All over Algarve golf courses are available and this region was considered the best destination in Europe for its practice. There are also conditions for the practise of surf, body board, Jet Ski and for dive fishing. The fans of nature have several trails available, starting in the seaside and finishing in the countryside, in Monchique and in Serra do Caldeirão. These routes are available for hiking, horse or bike riding or driving a jeep.
