Portugal is considered one of the leading golf destinations in Europe and was distinguished by World Travel Awards in this category in 2013. There is no shortage of golf courses or tournaments and you only need to choose where you wish to spend your holidays. The Portugal Masters and Madeira Island Open are part of the European professional golf circuit, the European Tour. The amateur players take part in several tournaments and there are more than one hundred associations and golf clubs organising competitions, but the most important ones are the “Expresso/BPI”, the World Corporate Golf and the FedEx Golf Challenge. The calendar is available on the Federação Portuguesa de Golfe website.
For professionals or amateurs there are plenty of places to choose from, especially in Algarve, the first region to combine its touristic offer with golf. Only in this zone of the country exist 32 golf courses, being a significant part of them integrated in hotels and luxury resorts. The philosophy nonetheless has spread all over the country.
The fans of this sport have the possibility to choose the place and scenery where they wish to play. Portugal is a small country, but there are many types of landscapes and the existent road network is really good, allowing a quick access to the main cities. Besides playing and resting, for those who wish, there are cultural events in the urban centres to attend.
Golf is also played in the islands, both in Azores and Madeira. Madeira, with a subtropical climate, has three golf courses and promotes the Madeira Island Open, a stage of the European Tour. In the Azores you can also find three golf courses and a breathtaking landscape.
