The Madeira Ultra Trail is very probably the most beautiful stage of the Portugal trail running circuit. The contestants cross the island from Porto Moniz to Machico and run through the mountain, which has lovely views over the ocean and the forest. “The experience is unique”, says the Association Trail Running Portugal. However, this is not the only stage in a busy calendar that includes another one in Gerês in an area of natural park.
The terrain in Portugal is very appropriated for this kind of sport. The trail running consists of hiking and running in the middle of nature, which can assume mountain sceneries or can be carried out in the plains. The most important conditions are the competition being done in a non-asphalted trail as much as possible and respecting the environment. The stages, however, may happen both during the night or day.
According to the competitions calendar of the Association Trail Running Portugal, there are ten trail stages in the national circuit and seven in Ultra Trail national circuit planned. In this last category, besides the stage in Madeira, there is the Trail Nocturno of Óbidos (a trail by night) and the Ultra Trail of Serra de São Mamede.
